| http://mysanfordherald.com/articles/2008/04/3783.html Joseph brings 'Dreamcoat' to helen Stairs Theatre By Joe Hendricks, Herald Staff - Wed, Apr 16, 2008
SANFORD – With one weekend of performances under their belts, the cast and crew of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” are now looking ahead to three more performances of the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical.
Director June Powell, Musical Director Kate Murray, Choreographer Laurie Melia, Producers Sue Bitar and Mollie Lowrie and the rest of the Helen Stairs Theatre production staff have produced a highly enjoyable tale of persistence that serves as an example of how one can always make the best of a bad situation.
Based on the bible story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is fun, colorful, melodic, funny, touching and at times absurd.
Making his first appearance in a Helen Stairs Theatre Production, Adam Pate delivers a very strong performance in the lead role of Joseph. With vocals as muscular as his trim physique, Pate was nearly flawless during Sunday’s matinee performance.
Having already mastered the role of Joseph, Pate began rehearsals Monday evening for his upcoming lead role in the Helen Stairs Theatre production of High School Musical.
The scene where Joseph interprets the dreams of a Pharaoh that is “all shook up” about the future is one of the crazier scenes performed at the theatre in recent memory. Played by Franco Bottley, this Pharaoh is one crazy cat.
Cast in the role of Jacob, Joseph’s father, veteran actor Frosty Respess gets a great deal of stage time even though he says very little. With his toothy grin and numerous facial expressions, the ageless wonder has become the Milton Berle of the Helen Stairs Theatre.
Lucy Yarbrough gives a nice turn as the production’s singing narrator and Kent Walker is quite funny in his portrayal of the wealthy, self-absorbed Potiphar.
Sanford resident Marilyn Maples makes her theatrical debut as an imprisoned baker and as Jacob’s wife. She also appears in the big disco style finale.
Having never acted before, Maples said she loved the experience. As one who is always willing to donate her services for a good cause, Maples plans to remain active in the theater as both a thespian and a theater volunteer.
The sets and backdrops designed by Powell, Dan Williams, Liz Watkins and Marcos Olivares, and the massive rented Egyptian backdrop, lend an added measure of visual wonder to the production.
Williams and Liz Loberg do the cast justice with their sound engineering skills and the cues for the prerecorded backing music are spot on.
Lighting effects produced by Full Sail graduate Heidi Grimm add yet another layer of sophistication to the production.
As a former school teacher and the theater’s resident director of children’s productions, Powell chose to include many more singing youngsters to the cast than the script calls for. While gathered around Joseph’s feet or hidden behind the curtains, the youngsters’ vocal talents were quite impressive and added greatly to the production. The addition of the youngsters brought the total number of cast members to more than 50.
Powell also added a few clever cultural references to the non-era-specific production, including a McDonald’s prop.
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” resumes Friday night with a 7:30 show, is followed by a 7:30 p.m. Saturday night performance and concludes with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.
This G-rated, highly entertaining show makes for a perfect family outing and tickets range in price from $23 for VIP seats, $15 for balcony seats and $10 for students.
